The Hoary Redpoll is a backyard gift from Wild Nature

During the winter, you may find the Hoary Redpoll venturing into the north United States and all around Canada.  This backyard gift is a smaller bird and looks rather pale.  It rarely travels below the upper U.S. because it loves the cold.  During the summer months, you’ll rarely see this unique garden gift hanging around your birdfeeder.  In fact, it can only be found in the most northern Canadian areas.

However, when it does venture down south, it can often be found among large flocks of the Common Redpoll. That is if they aren’t in your birdfeeder.

The adult Hoary Redpoll is a very small little bird.  In fact, it’s one of the smallest finches.  It’s quite pale, although it does have a black chin, a red forehead, and a white rump and under tail.  Both subspecies of the Hoary Redpoll look similar.  The Southern Hoary Redpoll lives in Canada, Eurasia, and Alaska and looks a bit darker.  The other, the Greenland Hoary Redpoll, lives in the northern part of Greenland and in Canada.  Because they live so far north, they have very fluffy feathers to keep them warm.
